Walter Goehr (1903-1960)
Malpopita - Radio Opera (1931)
There is a wide selection of music from the years between World War I and II available in the Capriccio programme. The music of those years often refers to technical achievements and new media. Thus, the short-lived genre of the broadcasting or radio opera was born. “Malpopita” by Walter Goehr is an opera of this kind. The piece on the short-term illusion the workers had when they thought their life would be easier after acquiring sudden wealth was first performed in 1931 by Erich Kleiber. Composer Walter Goehr, who was forced to leave Germany like so many others, later became famous in England as a conductor and record producer. The Komische Oper Berlin rediscovered the work last year, and Capriccio now presents a live recording of that performance.
