"No music has ever made such an
impression on me. It is magnificent."
These were the words uttered by the Elector Karl Theodor of Bavaria, who commissioned the work, when he first heard it in 1781.
In a plot which resembles the biblical tale of Jephtha, Idomeneo Mozart's first great opera seria focuses on the King of Crete, Idomeneo, who makes a bargain with Neptune to spare his life after a shipwreck in exchange for a human sacrifice - the first person he meets. In true operatic fashion, his son Idamante finds him on the beach and so the drama begins.
Performed by Pinchgut Opera with the Orchestra of the Antipodes on Classical instruments, and with a stellar cast headed by English tenor Mark Tucker, Australia's first recording of Idomeneo will be a gem in any opera collection.
